What is X9?

X9 is ChatNet's channel service for registered channels: the original K9, brought back. It keeps a channel's user list with access levels, knows who is who when they come in, and looks after the channel for its owners: ops, bans, kicks, topic and the rest, with the same commands people used on K9 in ChatNet's early years.

X9 was rebuilt for ChatNet by its Channel Service team, working from the original K9 documentation and help files, so it behaves the way K9 always did.

It isn't a patched-up copy of old code — no usable copy of the original K9 source survived. X9 is a from-scratch rewrite on modern infrastructure, built to match K9's documented commands and behavior rather than carry old bugs forward. See Today for the full rebuild status.

How it works

• Access levels go up to 500. Level 500 is the channel master, 400 and up manage the channel's user list, and the levels below give ops (100), bans (75) and kicks (50). The full list for your level is one message away.
• No NickServ account needed. X9 knows you by your hostmask and a password you choose for that channel: you AUTH each time you come back, before it obeys you.
• Passwords are never kept in the clear. They are stored hashed, and a person who knows yours has as much control as you do: never type it in the channel.
